Helen McCookerybook
Helen McCookerybook first came to prominence in the late
seventies as the bassist and vocalist with poetic punk outfit
'The Chefs', releasing two singles, both including versions of
the fan favourite '24 Hours', for Graduate in 1980 and Attrix in
81. She later formed Helen & The Horns, releasing 'Freight
Train' for Thin Sliced Records in 84. She signed to RCA later
that year, releasing two singles 'Footsteps at my door' and
'Surrey with a fringe on top', followed by a long awaited album
in 85 for RockinRay Records. Then she slept for 20 years before
returning with a new career as a solo artist, writer and
lecturer and a new album 'Suburban Pastoral', released in 06 for
Rough Trade. In July 07 she published her first book: 'The Lost
Women Of Rock Music; Female Musicians Of The Punk Era' for
Ashgate press. Helen also publishes her own comics; takes art
commissions and recorded the album 'Hamilton Square' with Martin
Stephenson in july 09. She is currently touring with John Cooper
Clarke and Don Letts. '24 HOURS' (copyright Helen McCookerybook
1981): Hanging around you for a year and a day business is
business and passes the time quite well but it's so difficult
when all I want to say is stay with me 'cos only time can tell.
Longing to love you since I first set eyes on you playing around
just to keep my cool every evening I stand outside your house
it's true waiting and waiting and crying like a fool. I know if
I catch you it might turn out that it's not as much fun as i'd
hoped that it would be 'cos wishing and waiting is what it's all
about and dreams are worth ten times more than reality. So sad
you're so cool what can I do? I'd really like to be friends with
you 24 hours of every day you're on my mind and there you'll
stay. *There are links on her website to her artwork, blogs and
