Biography – Mark Niel
Mark first stood on stage and declared himself a poet in May
2008. Audiences immediately warmed to his assured performances
and deft ability to blend humour, pathos and provocative
material.
In an amazingly short space of time, Mark has come to the
attention of leading Spoken Word organisations having won Slams
with Apples and Snakes; Hammer and Tongue; Spiel and Farrago.
2009 was an amazing year for Mark as he reached the final rounds
of two National finals and performed at the Cheltenham
Literature Festival as well as in London’s West End.
Mark’s prize-winning material ranges from personal reflections
to barn-storming Performance Pieces and he has been published by
United Press, Forward Press, Monkey Kettle and South Bank
Poetry. As well as performing, Mark also founded and hosts
"Tongue in Chic" a Poetry and Spoken Word event in Milton Keynes
which brings in the best performers on the national scene to
entertain and inspire local writers. |

SYMPTOMS OF LOVE
Heart and pulse racing,
My palms damp and sweaty.
I feel like my legs
Have turned to spaghetti.
Tight chest, breathlessness,
A bitter miasma.
I saw the doctor.
It’s not love, it’s asthma.
The day the world died,
Nations gathered
For the will to be read.
It turned out meek
DID inherit the earth,
But they asked for the money instead

Drawing on years of experience of acting and writing for theatre
(Mark won the inaugural Marie Curie One Page Play Competition)
his energetic performances never fail to make an impression.
Whether despairing at his frequently misspelt name, raging at
things that make him angry (that’s a long list by the way) or
confessing his peccadilloes to an unsuspecting crowd his sets
are stuffed full with humour, intelligence and changes of gear.
To find “proper poems” that are genuinely moving rubbing
shoulders with rants about the frustrations of Fridges in shared
houses is a rare and expertly handled experience.
So, if you thought Milton Keynes had nothing to offer except
Concrete Cows and somewhere for Londoners to park and ride, then
watch out because Mark is leading a poetic mission to make you
change your mind. Mark has appeared with John Hegley, Zena
Edwards, Elvis McGonagall, Jean “Binta” Breeze, Ava Vidal, Niall
O'Sullivan, A F Harrold, Simon Munnery and Rachel Pantechnicon. |
THE DRUD DEALER AND THE POET
I was talking to a drug
dealer the other day, (purely for research purposes you
understand).
He said we had much in
common.
“Like what”? I asked.
Well for a start, “pot” is
three quarters of “poet” and all the poets I ever met were
at least three quarters gone the whole time.
A good point, well made, I
felt. Albeit anecdotal in nature rather than based on firm
data.
He warmed to his theme. “We
can both get people high and we both help their minds
expand”. He took my silence for dissension. “I bet you can’t
think of a single difference between us”.
“I’ll take that challenge”
I said. “You deal in lines, I deal in words. Both lead to
very different sentences”. Oh yes, I was very pleased with
myself.
He thought for a while then
said “I don’t like puns. I find they lack substance and
smack of artifice”.
Everyone’s a critic. That
the last time I make conversation in Camden.

ADDICTION
It started with the famous five,
Though I had no time for Dick,
Or Julian or Timmy the dog.
Ann and Georgina made me tick
Recently it’s Lara Croft
and Uma Thurman too,
as Beatrix Kiddo in Kill Bill
Volume one and two.
It’s become an obsession
Female stars of film and fiction.
I consulted a psychiatrist
For the name of my affliction.
He said “I’m sorry, I’m afraid you have
A Heroine addiction”. |
