Richard Frost

...is a product of his own imagination, and has not yet been confimed to exist by objective reporters. There have been numerous sightings of him at spoken word events across the South East and East Midlands over the last two years, with descriptions varying from 'a formless entity with no sense of direction', to 'a manifestation of light in various shades of blue'.

It is believed that he exists in the gap between certainty and doubt, explores universal truths about the Human Condition, and can't be killed with conventional weapons. He currently lives just off the shores of the twenty-first century and is in a long term relationship with his fears.

They

Some live by selling dreams and buying hopes;
They own the sky and lease the earth.

One day They will find a way
of selling rainbows to the blind,
who will fight among each other
just to get their hands on one.

And one day They will make us pay
to look up at the stars;
there will be a fee to see the moon
and a price on sunsets.

And one day They will take away
the fresh air and clean water
and then sell it back with interest
to those they stole it from.

Then men will be sent overseas
to bring back as much land
as they can carry, after making sure
there's no-one left living on it.

And this will happen because we allow it,
because we have lost sight of yesterday
in the search for tomorrow
and They have us all believe that life
is so good now we shouldn't wish
to trade for the alternative.
We forget that there's enough
to go around if we only share it,
but we long to belong
to the Haves not the Have-Nots.

The mountains keep on reaching,
but they will never touch the sky;
only water, which runs downhill
and underground, will ever do that.

The Spearmaker

"The next war will be fought with nuclear weapons; the war after that, with spears."
Source unknown.

He who makes the spears
Has no loyalty to those who buy them;
He will sell his merchandise to either side -
The supply increases the demand.

He makes his living at the expense of theirs
And will never raise a spear in his life
Because he knows it will fly in either direction
And always comes down sharp-end first;
The real danger lies at the end with the handle
And beyond, to those who guide the hands
And push the arms.

The spearmaker also knows
That if he wasn't making spears
Then someone else would be finding ways
Of throwing bigger rocks.

Yawn Chorus

I always keep a yawn in a jar
next to my bed for emergencies,
along with a pile of old headaches.

I also have a small amount
of shivers on my windowsill,
as bait to trap the dawn.

I hide my dreams under the pillow
with a bottle of fermented rainbows
and my door is always bolted shut
to keep the future out.

Sometimes I leave the curtains drawn
to let the shadows breed,
and often I am still awake
long after the clock is asleep.
